Buying athletic shoes is about more than finding shoes in a specific size and color. The right pair can help prevent injuries while exercising. Think about the seasons. If you are buying athletic shoes to use outside in the winter, you want to look for a pair that has traction and is waterproof for being in the snow and ice, Aldana said. Shoes that are reflective are also important for being outside when it is dark, he said. 4. Go big. Buy athletic shoes that are a half or a full size bigger than you usually wear, he said. Aldana said when you are exercising, your feet can swell, causing your shoe to be too tight. 5. Try inserts. Aldana suggested wearing your new shoes around the house to get used to them. 9. Just exercise.
