Who says all the elderly people lose the sharpness of their brains. Some people do not have a decline in brain condition despite being over 65 years old. Neurologist Marsel Mesulam called it super ager.

Super ager's brain is physically different from the human brain in general. Their brains are slightly larger, especially in the outer cortex, the part of the brain that is made up of gray matter and rich in neurons.

However, whether the condition occurs since birth or because it is protected from damage due to aging?

In a study published in the journal PLOS One in July 2011, Yasuyaki Taki and colleagues compared the brains of 24 super ager men and women with 12 other people with normal brain conditions.

In an 18-month study, Taki found that a normal human brain had atrophy more than twice as much as the ager super brain.

researchers are trying to move further. They want to know whether social conditions also contribute to super ager brain.

To get the answer, Emily Rogalski and her colleagues studied 31 super ager humans over 80 years, and 19 people at the same age as the average cognate.

As a result, superagers have a more satisfying and high-quality relationship than normal-brained

Rogalski and his team asked all participants to fill out a questionnaire to assess the happiness and satisfaction of life. Despite getting the same relative score, the super agers stand out in friendly relationships with others.

The results of this study have been published in the journal PLOS One on 23 October 2017.

"It's not as simple as saying if you have a strong social network, you will never get Alzheimer's disease," Rogalski said as proclaimed Science Alert on Sunday (5/11/2017).

"But if there is a list of healthy options one can take, such as eating certain foods and not smoking, keeping a strong social network may be important on that list."

Normally, as people age, the gray matter in the human brain undergoes shrinkage and degradation. In fact, its function is very important that is to see, hear, process emotions, self-control, learn new information.

In addition to the gray matter, the white matter in the brain that contains the network of complex fibers also experience shrinkage. White matter brings information to different parts of the brain.

In a publication in Nature Communication in November 2014, Yuka Sasaki and colleagues say, brain white substances can act as a backup generator when the performance of gray matter decreases.

If this mutual support does not happen, the result looks like most normal people. Memories become blurred, difficulty concentrating and learning new skills.

However, do not despair. There is still a way we can do it. Numerous studies show that regular exercise, keeping bonds with friends and family can be done. Also, the never-ending is like quitting smoking and learning new things.
