The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional festival of China. If you want to learn Chinese culture, you can not miss the chance to learn about how to celebrate it. It is considered to honor the death of Qu Yuan - one of the greatest poets of China. In ancient time, the Chinese believe that the activities have an ability to get rid of the disease. And now, apart from the traditional activities, there are more modern forms to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.
Generally, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. And the celebration activities can last one or two month during the festival period. In order to ward off disease, Chinese may hang herbs on their front door. There are some legendary celestial beings who are capable of catching ghosts, such as Zhong Kui. Chinese may hang his picture to avoid the invasion of evil spirits.
Zongzi is the traditional food of Dragon Boat Festival. After Qu Quan drowned himself in Miluo River, the local people threw Zongzi into the river to protect his body from being eaten by fishes. Zongzi is the rice dumpling which is covered by bamboo leaves and now, the rice is combined with other delicious fillings. Xiong Huang Wine is considered to be able to fight against the evil sprits as well. The adults will drink it on the festival. Although the children are not allowed to drink the wine, the adults will put some on their forehead.
If you learn Chinese culture, you may find that there are many seemingly strange traditions. For example, the people will wear the amulet which is filled by herb and spice. An accessory like this is considered to have the power to drive the worms and insects. In addition, just like its name implies, the Chinese will hold Dragon Boat races during the festival. Now, due to the popularity of the Dragon Boat Festival, there are a lot of foreign communities which have taken an active part in the races.
In addition to the Dragon Boat Festival, there are other traditional festivals you need to be familiar if you want to learn Chinese culture. For example, the Mid-autumn Festival and Spring Festival, both of them are the important festivals and Chinese families will gather together to celebrate them.
