The Black Cats headed into the Tyne-Wear derby level on points with third-bottom Burnley, who had earlier ground out a goalless draw with Tottenham, but Jermain Defoe's stunning volley on the stroke of half-time was enough to give them a precious three points.
Although it was their fifth successive win over the Magpies, it was their first top-flight triumph since beating Burnley at the end of January and they can now be backed at 4/11 to stay up and a best of 15/8 to go down.
Elastico Finale III There was little to report from Turf Moor and although a draw was a creditable result for the Clarets, they now find themselves two points behind Aston Villa and Hull, who both have 28.
Burnley are 4/6 to go down while their survival odds have been trimmed slightly to 11/10.
On Saturday, bottom club Leicester and QPR gave themselves a lifeline by claiming surprise wins.
QPR, whose remaining fixtures look among the toughest of those sides battling at the bottom, stunned West Brom, winning 4-1 at The Hawthorns with what was just their second away win of the campaign; they have lost the other 13. Meanwhile, Leicester beat West Ham 2-1 thanks to a late goal from substitute Andy King.
Following Sunday's results, the Londoners are now three points from safety and 11/4 to stay up and are now 1/4 to be relegated. Leicester, six points off the pace but with a game in hand, are 12/5 and 3/10 in those respective markets.
Hull went down 3-1 at Swansea, while Villa were beaten by the same scoreline at Manchester United.

Liverpool, who now trail United by eight points, were subsequently moved out to 13/2 and Southampton, a further point back, to 16s.
