A direct coal fired system is where the coal is ground and immediately discharged to the kiln for burning. These systems usually use heat from the combustion chamber to perform the grinding functions. The other option is to perform the grinding in an indirect fashion. An indirect coal firing system stores the coal until it is needed. This gives downtime for maintenance on the grinding equipment without having to stop the firing operation. It also eliminates the need to match the air in the burner to the air required to sweep the mill. These advantages are balanced out by the fact that additional equipment is required.
